Germans commonly know Sweden as a prime holiday destination. We love the sense of stillness and peace. Everything seems a tad more relaxed. And given its beautiful landscape, it’s no wonder people dream of settling here.
Sweden is known for its innovative society. Among its successful international companies are IKEA, Spotify, Skype and H&M. Swedes tend to be open-minded and practice a lifelong learning mentality. The people are quite agreeable and can be willing to argue until everyone share an opinion.
Sweden is part of the EU and part of the European domestic market. EU citizens are thus able to travel and find work without any hindrances.
Norway is commonly known as a prime holiday destination. Instantly, you feel a sense of stillness and peace. Everything seems a tad more relaxed. And given its beautiful landscape, it’s no wonder people dream of settling here.
The Norwegian working life distinguishes itself by its attitude of laid-back tolerance and passionate commitment. Every individual is important. When working in teams, the strengths of all shall unfold in harmony. Norway is also more digitally-oriented. Form and applications often are filled out and handed in online only. Norwegians tend to be open-minded and known to practice lifelong learning.
Despite the country’s independence from the EU, Norway remains to be a part of the European domestic market. EU-citizens are thus able to travel in and out without hindrances and receive a 3-month period to be employed in its labour market.
You will find relatively little bureaucracy in Norway. When you immigrate, however, you will have to work with authorities to receive the all-important Personal Number (“Personnummer”). For this, the one prerequisite is to have a job in the country, or be in arrangements that take care of one’s living expenses.
Pretty much every Norwegian citizen knows how to speak English. Still, they expect immigrants to learn Norwegian or to at least be proficient in a different Scandinavian language. One doesn’t have to speak perfectly, but enough to communicate basics. In the workplace, every employer and industry sets their own proficiency-standards. Handyman-jobs require basics only, especially in the beginning months of employment. A position in health care requires higher proficiencies (B2, C1). In language-heavy position such as teaching-jobs, or occupations in commercial markets, it is hard to find success without good Norwegian language skills.
Dutch is a clear first place when ranking languages in similarity to German. The good news is: Norwegian comes in second. Learning the language is thus quite intuitive for German speakers.

Handymen and nurses are in especially high demand, but from experience, we know that mindset and motivation matters most. If these two factors are on solid ground, you can find your footing in any occupation.
Finnish is a kind of its own among the Scandinavian languages, but luckily, many fins speak fluent Swedish as well.
In Finland, we find an internationally open and digitally advanced society. Maybe you already heard about the country’s successful, creative education system. Throughout the past years, Finland consistently ranks among the first places in PISA rankings.
Finland is a member of the European Union and consequently a part of the EU trade agreement. EU citizens can thus immigrate and look for work without hindrances.
You can find your footing in any occupation, provided you have the right motivation for the Finnish calm and creative way of life. Health care jobs are in particular high demand, as the country except 30,000 health care workers to retire in the upcoming years. For those positions, language skills on C1 Level is required.

North-Germans got the country Denmark right around the corner. Many German Handymen commute back and forth for work purposes. As a commuter in Southern Denmark, you can succeed in the workplace without any Danish language skills. Still we advise to learn Danish to anyone who immigrates or frequently visits Denmark, given the benefits in experiencing Danish everyday life to its full potential.
In Denmark, we find a very open attitude to globalization and digitalization. The country has a thriving start-up scene.
Denmark is a member of the European Union and consequently a part of the EU trade agreement. EU citizens can thus immigrate and look for work without hindrances.

Even though most Swedes are fluent English-speakers, they expect immigrants to learn the language and speak with at least basic proficiency. If you look for work in the Swedish labour market, you won’t easily achieve success without solid language skills. The expected proficiency level differs among employers and industries. As a handyman, basic Swedish-skills are enough to get started. Health-care services demand a higher degree of fluency. In language-heavy position such as teaching-jobs, or occupations in commercial markets, it is hard to find success without good Norwegian language skills.
The Swedish language is quite similar to German and thus relatively easy to learn.

“9 years ago, I quit my job in Germany and decided to move to Sweden. It was time for a change and once I came across Nordic Way, I just thought to myself: “exactly, this is will make it happen.”
I went to visit Sweden for the first time in 1997 and my love for the country and its people has held on ever since. Joyful and welcoming atmosphere combined with beautiful landscape left a lasting impression. Thus, I found my way to Rostock to learn Swedish for 3 months. I was scared and didn’t believe in my language skills, but with help of my fantastic teachers and classmates, I made it through successfully. We laughed, learned and trembled. After all, we chose the intensive course! By now, German is the language I have more difficulty with and I’ve never regretted my decision of coming to Sweden.
Of course I miss my family, but every time I return to Sweden after a visit, I know I made the right decision.
A big thank you to the Nordic Way Team of 2012. Without you guys, I would’ve never been able to follow my passion and take the risk!
